Pilates for Your Sport

Developing an athlete’s core – the deep abdominal muscles along with the muscles closest to the spine – makes athletes more agile, helps prevent injury and increases sports performance.

From weekend warriors to elite professionals, athletes looking for a competitive edge are discovering that Pilates helps you:

Hit the ball farther

Run faster

Jump higher

Correct muscle imbalances

Prevent injury

Pilates builds a strong core, increases strength and flexibility simultaneously, and improves posture, stability and alignment. It also emphasizes complete concentration on smooth, flowing movement, and proper breathing. You become acutely aware of how your body feels, where it is in space, and how best to control its movement.

After graduating in Applied Biology in 1984, Mr. Mak worked for 6 years at the Regional Immunology Centre (Newcastle on Tyne) as Medical Scientist on humoral and cellular immunology. After graduating a second time in 1993; this time in Physiotherapy, he gained wide experience in the musculoskeletal field at several NHS hospitals in the North of England. He became employed in private practice for a short spell in 1997 where some of his time was spent treating professional athletes. He then moved into full time higher education for the next five years, lecturing in Physiotherapy first at University of Teesside and then a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. After leaving higher education in 2002, he worked part time for two years as a clinical specialist in musculoskeletal field in a leading NHS hospital and in his spare time, he delivers postgraduate education in acupuncture and related topics throughout the UK. He is currently researching into Tui Na (Chinese Medical Massage and Manipulation) and seeking ways to integrate this form of manual therapy into mainstream physiotherapy practice. He also finds time after leaving the NHS for a second time in developing his multi-disciplined private practice with clinical loads primarily in the area of complementary therapy, secondly in musculoskeletal and sport medicine.

Mr Mak is an advanced member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP) with a Postgraduate Diploma in Acupuncture gained in 1996 at Nottingham. In parallel to the acupuncture study he also attended Sunderland University on a teaching course, which led to a Certificate in Education awarded in 1996. He is an active promoter of research and on the use of acupuncture in the North East of England. Mr Mak has been an approved trainer of the AACP for a number of years and is currently an active member of the Education, Training and Research Committee (ETRC) of the AACP.

Since 1997, Mr Mak has run numerous acupuncture courses in the UK and is at the forefront of educational initiatives with a long experience in the delivery of up-to-date, practical acupuncture education throughout the UK.
